- Kurzfassung
- Gaseous detectors with wires as amplification structure are still used in particle physics experiments. A quantity of interest in such a detector is the spatial charge distribution of an electron avalanche around an anode wire. Aside from its fundamental relevancy for the understanding of the avalanche process its has some practical applications. For instance it can be used to remove the “right-left†ambiguity in multiwire proportional chambers or help understand ion tail characteristics in time-projection chambers. Since the avalanche extension is the result of the amplification processes and the electron transport properties in a gas, a treatment from first principles is not possible. In this thesis a detector has been constructed which can be used to measure the avalanche extension along and perpendicular to the anode wire. This is achieved by measuring the end location of the ions on a pixelated cathode. The avalanche is reconstructed from the size and position of the ion clusters on the pixel chip.
